Serigraphy

Serigraphy is the fine art form of silkscreen, an adaptation of stenciling. Stenciling has been around since prehistoric man blew pigments around his hand on cave walls. Egyptians used stenciling and others have used stencils to decorate fabric, walls and furniture for centuries.

The screen printing process involves creating a stencil (from paper or emulsion) adhered to a screen and pushing ink through the masked screen onto a support.

In the 1940's artists renamed the process serigraphy in order to make it sound like more of an art process. Some very influential artists in the 20th century worked with this medium, Andy Warhol perhaps being the most well known.
