Mold Making and Casting

Casting is a process of creating a form by pouring a material into a mold. Molds and casts have been used since man cast bronze in about 3600 BC in Mesopotamia. The lost wax process was first used in about the 5th century BC.

Modern casting materials include clay, plaster, latex, concrete and plastics. A simple casting process can be done using a box of wet sand and liquid plaster (sandcasting).

Slump molds can be used for clay or glass. This process uses softened, rather then molten, materials and can be made from pre-existing or molded forms. (For example, simple clay plates can be created by draping the clay over small canvas stretchers in a square shape).

Existing plastic containers can serve as molds for clay, plaster or concrete. Applying a lubricant, such as vaseline or grease, allows for removal of the molded form.

The above head was created using the process of hollow wax casting; done by modeling wax over a solid core.
